Eagles vs. Patriots NFL Week 1: Philadelphia most-wagered team ATS in league Sunday

Why did the #NFL schedule Eagles at Patriots in Week 1 Sunday in the late afternoon window with such a weak 1 p.m. ET slate and opposite games terrific matchups like Packers-Bears and Dolphins-Chargers where it might get a bit lost? It hasn’t hurt the betting action at all, however, as the most-wagered team on Sunday is Philadelphia in both tickets sold and money via one major book.

Sunday will be the first time that 2022 NFL MVP runner-up Jalen Hurts and many #FlyEaglesFly starters will take the field since their epic loss to Kansas City in Super Bowl 57. Hurts had one of the great games in Super Bowl history by completing 27 of 38 for 304 yards and a score while rushing for three TDs. He did have costly strip-sack fumble that was returned 36 yards by the Chiefs’ Nick Bolton about midway through the second quarter. The Eagles appeared like they were going to take control up 14-7, but that tied the game (they still would take another 10-point lead before blowing it).

Jalen Hurts got paid this offseason and has the NFL's best record since Week 10 in 2021.

Hurts became the NFL’s highest-paid player by average annual value for a spell this offseason but has since been passed by Lamar Jackson, who was passed by Justin Herbert, who was passed by this week by Joe Burrow. Since Week 10 of the 2021 season, Hurts is 21-4 as a starter including playoffs. That .840 winning percentage is the best in the league in that span.

Philadelphia is breaking in new coordinators on both sides of the ball, but it still should be fascinating matchup on the ground. The Eagles rushed for an NFL-record 42 touchdowns last season, including playoffs. Bill Belichick’s defense allowed only seven rush TDs, tied for the fewest.

It starts a make-or-break season for #GoPats quarterback Mac Jones as he hugely regressed in Year 2, although former offensive coordinator Matt Patricia has to take some of that blame. Patricia has been replaced by former Alabama offensive coordinator and Texans head coach Bill O’Brien in his second stint with the #ForeverNE (2007-11).

The last time O’Brien was the offensive player caller in New England, the Pats had the No. 2 total offense and No. 3 scoring offense. They also had Tom Brady. Last year, New England averaged 18.2 offensive PPG (team’s fewest since the 2000 season), 35% third down conversion rate (worst since 1992) and a 42% red zone TD rate (worst by any team in NFL last year). Under Belichick, the Pats were 249-75 with Brady and are 43-45 since he left.

Philadelphia was 7-1 on the road in the 2022 regular season but tied for the worst road ATS record in the NFL at 2-6. New England is 0-4 ATS in its past four as a home dog.
