Chiefs vs. Jets NFL Week 4: Total at 41.5, which Zach Wilson has not topped in 9 straight games

Have NFL oddsmakers not seen Zach Wilson play as the starting quarterback of the New York Jets? Their home game Sunday night against Kansas City has a total of 41.5 points. That might seem low involving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, but the Jets offense sans Aaron Rodgers has totaled just three touchdowns in three games and Wilson has played in nine straight games that failed to cross 40 total points scored.

The Jets say they are committed to Wilson … but they also signed veteran Trevor Siemian this week. At what point does the rest of the team revolt if Wilson continues to struggle mightily? Actually, that already might have happened as that Jets sideline was full of drama in last week’s brutal 15-10 loss to New England. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Michael Carter were caught on camera in animated conversations with assistant coaches.

Zach Wilson might be in danger of losing his job.

Wilson at least was not intercepted for the first time this year but managed just 157 total yards on 18-for-36 passing. The #TakeFlight managed three points and 61 total yards in their first nine possessions. Wilson had the NFL’s lowest passer rating in 2021 and 2022 and does currently this year. No player in NFL history has finished last in passer rating in three straight seasons. Wilson’s career completion percentage of 54.9% is the fourth-worst of any QB through 25 career games in the past 15 years (minimum 250 attempts).

"I think we need to hold our poise a little bit better across the board," Rodgers said of the bickering after last Sunday’s loss, which he watched in California while recovering from Achilles surgery. "Just offensively, we need to not have some of those things happen on the sideline and to be a little better and to be a, just be a little better competitors."

Amazingly, Wilson (8-16) is one loss shy of tying #ChiefsKingdom superstar Patrick Mahomes in career losses (66-17). The two-time MVP has 19 career halves with three passing TDs, while Wilson has zero games with three. Mahomes has more career halves with at least 300 passing yards (3) than Wilson has games total with 300 yards (2).

The latest to weigh in on the Jets quarterback situation was Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay Jr. this week. When asked what he's seen from Wilson and the offense on film, he said: "A team that wants to run the ball," Gay said with a smile. "That wasn't to be funny or anything. A-Rod [Aaron Rodgers] got hurt and it turned into a team in panic mode. That's what I see at least.”
