Broncos vs. Chiefs NFL Week 6: Patrick Mahomes never lost to Denver, may not have Travis Kelce

The Kansas City Chiefs have won 15 straight games against their AFC West rival Denver Broncos, covering the spread in 10, as the teams kick off Week 6 on Thursday night from Arrowhead Stadium. Patrick Mahomes could make some history with another victory and Kansas City is a 10.5-point favorite despite All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce listed as questionable.

That Chiefs winning streak is tied for the longest active in the NFL by one team over another with the New England Patriots over the New York Jets. It’s also tied for the fourth-longest in league history. The record belongs to the Dolphins, who won 20 in a row over Buffalo starting in 1970 and ending in 1979.

The streak predates Mahomes as he was a sophomore at Texas Tech the last time the Broncos won in the series, which was early in the 2015 season with Peyton Manning at quarterback. Mahomes looks to improve to 12-0 vs. Denver, which would tie Otto Graham vs. the Cardinals for the best record by a QB vs any team since 1950.

Patrick Mahomes' top weapon Travis Kelce is questionable tonight.

Mahomes just doesn’t lose to bad teams, period. He is an astounding 24-0 in career vs. clubs the entered at least two games below .500. That’s the longest such winning streak by a QB since the merger. Mahomes is 22-2 SU as a double-digit favorite but only 10-13-1 ATS.

The lone loss for Kansas City this year was also at home on a Thursday night and without Kelce: The season-opening Kickoff Game vs. Detroit. Kelce injured his knee a few days before that one and wanted to play, but the #ChiefsKingdom wouldn’t let him. He sprained an ankle in Sunday’s win vs. Minnesota and left for a while but returned and finished with 10 catches for 67 yards and a TD.

Kelce was a limited practice participant Tuesday in the Chiefs' only practice of the week. It would seem logical for KC to rest him as it doesn’t need Kelce to beat the sorry Broncos, but he's expected to play. He has 101 catches for 1,290 Yds and six TDs in 17 career games vs. Broncos. Those are his most yards and receptions vs. any club.

While the Denver offense and specifically Russell Wilson have played a lot better this year under Coach Sean Payton, his defense is atrocious. It ranks last in allowing 36.2 ppg and its 181 points allowed are tied for the sixth-most ever through five games of an NFL season. The #BroncosCountry are allowing 187.6 rushing yards per game, which is last. They are surrendering 263.0 ypg through the air, fourth-from-last. Your 2023 Broncos are the first team to allow at least 250 passing and 175 rushing yards through the first five games of any NFL season.

Perhaps the most ridiculous statistic involving the ineptitude of the Broncos dating back a bit is that they have lost 10 straight games when leading at halftime. That’s a record. Denver is 0-4-1 ATS this season but has covered three in a row in this series. The Broncos always lose to the Chiefs, but it’s usually competitive – the two games last year were decided by only nine points. Wilson is an amazing 7-0 ATS in his career as underdog of more than seven points, including 3-0 ATS with the Broncos.

Taylor Swift reportedly will be in attendance, her third game doing so to watch the Chiefs and her BF Kelce.
